Antique — Something that’s, like, really old. Probably musty, dusty, and moldy. Probably fabricated from wood and metal. Usually unstylish. An antique is “a relic or artifact from ancient times” or “a work of art, piece of furniture, or decorative inspired from object made at an ancient time”

Vintage — Something that’s too old to be considered “used” but not as old as Grandma. By calling it “vintage,” the one tries to distract you from the item’s blatant imperfections. Vintage products are often either mid-century modern (in style) or related to bygone culture or fashion trends.

Retro — Something that’s basically outdated and out of fashion. By calling it “retro,” We assign a sentimental value to something that’s simply not cool.

Ex-voto — A votive offering to a saint or to a divinity; the term is typically restricted to Christian examples. It’s given in fulfillment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, “from the vow made“ or in gratitude or devotion. These are placed in a church or chapel where the worshiper seeks grace or wish to offer thanks. The destinations of pilgrimages often include shrines decorated with ex-votos. These take a large sort of forms. They’re not only intended for the helping figure, but also as a sworn statement to later visitors of the received help. Intrinsically they’ll include texts explaining a miracle attributed to the helper, or symbols like a painted or modeled reproduction of a miraculously healed heart,
Combining these altogether, you get a special kind of product line which mixed with other styles, can give fantastic depth and patina to your home design.

Technical Input: a replacement, shiny piece of metal is often ‘antiqued’ or aged to give the appearance of a vintage and well-loved collectible. This attractive patina is often created through the method referred to as oxidizing or corroding. Depending on the type of metal, these antiquing and oxidizing processes can result in rusty brown-greens and brown-oranges for feel nostalgia, a variety of browns and black that end in a weathered look at decorative metals, or pleasing blues and purples that produce aged look at silver pieces. Room-temperature oxidizers and antiquing chemicals are often suitable for brass, bronze, copper, pewter, tin, silver, and nickel
